Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 4th quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan totaled $35,342,158, up 9.98% ($3,207,472) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2018 totaled $34,276,434, up 12.09% ($3,695,757) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2018 were $1,065,724, down 31.42% ($488,285) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2018 was $33,210,710, a 14.41% increase ($4,184,042) over the 4th quarter of 2017.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 113th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 111th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0189% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0192% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 97th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 94th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0275% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0297% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 128th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 123rd in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0017% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0024% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 27.07% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (31.39% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 24.72% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (27.30% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.69% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (7.67% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.71% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (2.71% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.69% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (11.79% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $8,138,783;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $460,301;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $423,831;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $3,549,082;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $785,081;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $557,867;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $342,154;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $216,443;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $148,557;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $124,705;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $116,688.

  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 1.66% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.00% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
