Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 4th quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Ukraine totaled $4,201,476,331, up 6.88% ($270,543,216) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 4th quarter of 2018 totaled $2,801,699,532, up 11.77% ($294,984,197) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 4th quarter of 2018 were $1,399,776,799, down 1.72% ($24,440,981) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 4th quarter of 2018 was $1,401,922,733, a 29.51% increase ($319,425,178) over the 4th quarter of 2017.

Ukraine was Russia’s 13th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2018 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.2487% of Russia’s total trade (down from 2.3518% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Ukraine was Russia’s 15th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 13th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.2505% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.4369% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Ukraine was Russia’s 9th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2018 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 2.2452% of Russia’s total imports (up from 2.2156% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 52.81% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (38.74% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.89% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (22.11% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 13.51% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (16.97% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.04% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (7.39% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 6.06% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (7.62% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.94% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (3.20% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.09% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (1.44% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $441,236,077;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $72,936,574;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $15,929,895.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $124,315,708;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $42,233,279;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $13,202,370;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $12,632,261;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $10,420,151;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - a decrease of $9,747,048;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $9,360,119.
