Russia’s Trade with Iran

In 2018, Russia’s trade with Iran totaled $1,740,949,875, up 1.99% ($33,987,034) from 2017.

Russia’s exports to Iran in 2018 were $1,207,811,490, down 8.14% ($106,984,153) from 2017.

Russia’s imports from Iran in 2018 totaled $533,138,385, up 35.95% ($140,971,187) from 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in 2018 was $674,673,105, a 26.87% decrease ($247,955,340) over 2017.

Iran was Russia’s 50th largest trading partner in 2018 (down from 48th in 2017), accounting for 0.2530% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2923% in 2017).

Iran was Russia’s 48th largest export market in 2018 (down from 47th in 2017), accounting for 0.2684% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.3682% in 2017).

Iran was Russia’s 54th largest supplier in 2018 (up from 60th in 2017), accounting for 0.2239% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.1728% in 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in 2018 (and in 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 65.64% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (41.89% in 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 13.77% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (14.04% in 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 9.90% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (17.10% in 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.59% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (22.09% in 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.66% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (3.61% in 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in 2018 over 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $55,542,337;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $12,984,179;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $4,566,944;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $3,948,484.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in 2018 over 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:
