Russia’s Trade with Australia

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Australia totaled $208,394,862, up 8.02% ($15,479,898) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $33,643,635, up 25.86% ($6,913,555) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Australia in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $174,751,227, up 5.15% ($8,566,343) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in the 1st quarter of 2019 was $141,107,592, a 1.19% increase ($1,652,788) over the 1st quarter of 2018.

Australia was Russia’s 70th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.1324% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1224% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Australia was Russia’s 92nd largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 96th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0322% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0259% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Australia was Russia’s 43rd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 47th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.3294% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.3043% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Australia

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 32.53% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (37.92% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 26.50% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (37.54% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 25.03% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (6.70% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.88% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (8.21% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.83% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (4.87% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.90% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (2.06% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $6,629,269;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $2,128,189;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $316,746;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $291,199;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $273,619;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $197,192;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $187,361.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $1,093,262;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $956,056;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $379,506;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $266,604;
  • Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, not elsewhere specified or included; illuminated sign illuminated nameplates and the like; prefabricated buildings (HS code 94) - a decrease of $160,803;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $159,654.
