Russia’s Trade with Kenya

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Kenya was $34,669,570, down 35.33% ($18,940,333) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 were $7,343,991, down 56.88% ($9,685,847) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 were $27,325,579, down 25.30% ($9,254,486) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 was $19,981,588, a 2.21% increase ($431,361) over the 1st quarter of 2018.

Kenya was Russia’s 107th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (down from 94th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0220% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0340% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Kenya was Russia’s 125th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (down from 108th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0070% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0165% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Kenya was Russia’s 82nd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (down from 79th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0515% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0670% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Kenya

The major share of Russian exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 62.66% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (27.22% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 23.67% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (23.18% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 6.51% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (16.67% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 5.07% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (5.50% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.14% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (1.66% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 0.56% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (25.64% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $1,733,635;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $635,918;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $41,412;
  • Articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials (HS code 68) - an increase of $28,112.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $3,947,425;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $3,907,200;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $2,135,560;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $564,650;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $443,518;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $442,262;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $228,244;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $212,648;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $133,656;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $64,379;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $48,236.

Russia’s Imports from Kenya

The major share of Russian imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.57% of Russia’s total imports from Kenya (99.70% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $3,816,829;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $87,520.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $6,396,583;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $5,705,475;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $1,166,982.
