Russia’s Trade with Malaysia

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Malaysia totaled $768,355,448, up 11.75% ($80,777,727) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $402,628,110, up 32.40% ($98,521,226) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2019 were $365,727,338, down 4.63% ($17,743,499) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade balance with Malaysia went from a deficit of $79,363,953 in the 1st quarter of 2018, to a surplus of $36,900,772 in the 1st quarter of 2019.

Malaysia was Russia’s 38th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 40th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.4881% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.4362% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Malaysia was Russia’s 43rd largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 47th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.3857% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.2952% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Malaysia was Russia’s 31st largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.6895% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.7022% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Malaysia

The major share of Russian exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 90.04% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (91.77% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.99% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (3.73% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.12% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (1.82% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.09% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (0.84% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.55% of Russia’s total exports to Malaysia (1.20% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $82,846,430;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $2,317,447;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $2,071,259;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $1,413,287.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $2,963,410;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $2,099,994.

Russia’s Imports from Malaysia

The major share of Russian imports from Malaysia in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 56.97% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (62.87% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 19.96% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (17.91% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 12.99% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (14.66% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 6.62% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (0.39% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.95% of Russia’s total imports from Malaysia (1.15% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $4,502,923;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $2,827,105;
