Russia’s Trade with Nigeria

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Nigeria totaled $76,131,514, up 5.16% ($3,732,771) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $71,072,325, up 4.71% ($3,195,597) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $5,059,189, up 11.88% ($537,174) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 was $66,013,136, a 4.20% increase ($2,658,423) over the 1st quarter of 2018.

Nigeria was Russia’s 85th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 89th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0484% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0459% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Nigeria was Russia’s 76th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 77th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0681% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0659% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Nigeria was Russia’s 104th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 110th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0095% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0083% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Nigeria

The major share of Russian exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 52.75% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (51.15% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 17.93% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (35.71% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 12.95% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (0.01% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.71% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (9.27% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.83% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (2.73% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.31% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (1.11% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $9,203,235;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $1,836,976;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $1,618,621;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $1,512,741;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $911,979;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $623,138;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $377,247.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $11,492,201;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $1,123,745;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $452,128;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $347,458.

Russia’s Imports from Nigeria

The major share of Russian imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 96.61% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (94.14% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.38% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (5.69% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $757,635.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $115,185;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $82,876.
