Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with South Africa totaled $203,097,937, up 27.17% ($43,395,438) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $40,178,181, up 44.75% ($12,421,374) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $162,919,756, up 23.47% ($30,974,064) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2019 was $122,741,575, a 17.81% increase ($18,552,690) over the 1st quarter of 2018.

South Africa was Russia’s 71st largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 76th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.1290% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.1013% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

South Africa was Russia’s 88th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 95th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0385% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0269% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

South Africa was Russia’s 45th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 52nd in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.3071% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.2416% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 28.51% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (4.89% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 25.75% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (7.64% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 20.81% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (49.31% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.14% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (21.81% in the 1st quarter of 2018);

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $1,110,066;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $210,621;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - a decrease of $3,496,627;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $1,885,865;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $1,462,692;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $1,328,655;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $368,286;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $258,501;
