Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $5,977,425,969, up 15.61% ($807,234,143) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $2,685,940,414, up 2.08% ($54,609,899) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $3,291,485,555, up 29.64% ($752,624,244) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a surplus of $92,469,204 in the 1st quarter of 2018, to a deficit of $605,545,141 in the 1st quarter of 2019.

The US was Russia’s 7th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 3.7970% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.2799% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The US was Russia’s 10th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 11th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.5732% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.5541% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 4th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 6.2053% of Russia’s total imports (up from 4.6491% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 44.88% of Russia’s total exports to the US (22.76% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 21.88% of Russia’s total exports to the US (45.40% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 14.88% of Russia’s total exports to the US (18.52% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 10.77% of Russia’s total exports to the US (5.52% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.35% of Russia’s total exports to the US (2.70% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.79% of Russia’s total exports to the US (2.25% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $143,972,696;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $56,102,683;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $24,827,843.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $114,694,317;

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $16,420,408;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $12,150,420;
