Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Ukraine was $3,238,992,908, down 3.96% ($133,513,993) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $2,104,254,942, up 0.46% ($9,611,639) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 1st quarter of 2019 were $1,134,737,966, down 11.20% ($143,125,632) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 1st quarter of 2019 was $969,516,976, a 18.70% increase ($152,737,271) over the 1st quarter of 2018.

Ukraine was Russia’s 13th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 15th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.0575% of Russia’s total trade (down from 2.1395% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Ukraine was Russia’s 14th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 15th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.0159% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.0332% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Ukraine was Russia’s 10th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (down from 9th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.1393% of Russia’s total imports (down from 2.3400% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 54.69% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (46.96% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 15.92% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (21.46% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.51% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (7.41% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 7.19% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (9.29% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 6.94% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (8.17% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.05% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (3.30% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.11% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (1.17% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $127,993,086;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - an increase of $52,669,653;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $22,195,884.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - a decrease of $13,550,442;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $11,910,789;
