Russia’s Trade with Costa Rica

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Costa Rica was $26,987,760, down 51.09% ($28,193,903) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $5,266,301, down 81.72% ($23,544,615) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $21,721,459, down 17.63% ($4,649,288) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade balance with Costa Rica went from a surplus of $2,440,169 in the 2nd quarter of 2018, to a deficit of $16,455,158 in the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Costa Rica was Russia’s 110th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 96th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0169% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0323% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 132nd largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 100th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0052% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0261% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 85th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 84th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0366% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0434% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Costa Rica

The major share of Russian exports to Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 97.93% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (20.06% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 0.94% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (35.24% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.00% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (44.32% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $17,655;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $16,584.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $11,999,022;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $10,102,425;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $769,675;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $437,739;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $134,805;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $84,673;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $61,213;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $17,200.

Russia’s Imports from Costa Rica

The major share of Russian imports from Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 60.15% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (66.39% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 37.26% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (32.36% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.24% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (0.62% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - an increase of $891,631;

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:
