Russia’s Trade with Ethiopia

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Ethiopia was $14,044,393, down 55.15% ($17,270,713) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $7,349,838, down 71.09% ($18,072,215) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 totaled $6,694,555, up 13.60% ($801,502) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 was $655,283, a 96.64% decrease ($18,873,717) over the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Ethiopia was Russia’s 131st largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 114th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0088% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0183% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 126th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 101st in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0073% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0231% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 104th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 103rd in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0113% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0097% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Ethiopia

The major share of Russian exports to Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 85.66% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (21.73% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 11.22% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (1.92% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.75% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (76.13% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $772,092;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $591,630;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $128,295;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $47,483;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $26,510.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $19,220,961;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $255,647;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $133,407;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $28,240.

Russia’s Imports from Ethiopia

The major share of Russian imports from Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 92.61% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (95.43% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 7.37% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (4.57% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $1,822,648;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted (HS code 61) - an increase of $192,221;

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $1,271,196;
  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $98,137;
  • Lac; gums, resins and other vegetable saps and extracts (HS code 13) - a decrease of $30,214.
