Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Japan was $5,270,700,780, down 5.85% ($327,599,372) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $2,941,208,902, down 11.48% ($381,366,208) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 totaled $2,329,491,878, up 2.36% ($53,766,836) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 was $611,717,024, a 41.57% decrease ($435,133,044) over the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 3.2924% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.2755% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Japan was Russia’s 10th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 9th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.9189% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.0149% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Japan was Russia’s 6th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (up from 7th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 3.9267% of Russia’s total imports (up from 3.7486% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 73.94% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (75.43% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 8.34% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (8.90% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 7.74% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (7.36% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
