Russia’s Trade with Kenya

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Kenya was $55,056,950, down 50.39% ($55,925,144) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $26,532,331, down 66.53% ($52,744,997) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $28,524,619, down 10.03% ($3,180,147) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade balance with Kenya went from a surplus of $47,572,562 in the 2nd quarter of 2018, to a deficit of $1,992,288 in the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Kenya was Russia’s 93rd largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 82nd in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0344% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0649% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Kenya was Russia’s 96th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 80th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0263% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0719% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Kenya was Russia’s 83rd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 82nd in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0481% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0522% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Kenya

The major share of Russian exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 63.31% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (69.67% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 16.44% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (6.79% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 11.14% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (4.62% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.10% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (0.92% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.75% of Russia’s total exports to Kenya (1.04% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $1,301,929;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $596,212;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $94,765.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $37,854,717;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $1,621,396;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $652,827;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $356,303;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $345,592;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $329,117;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $145,441.

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - an increase of $641,466;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $376,538;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $225,293;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $108,144.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Kenya in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Live trees and other plants; bulbs, roots and the like; cut flowers and ornamental foliage (HS code 06) - a decrease of $3,354,430;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $760,408;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $448,046.
