Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Syria was $36,390,255, down 79.43% ($140,505,483) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $35,984,903, down 79.52% ($139,720,122) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $405,352, down 65.96% ($785,361) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2019 was $35,579,551, a 79.61% decrease ($138,934,761) over the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Syria was Russia’s 102nd largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 76th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0227% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1035% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Syria was Russia’s 91st largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 66th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0357% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.1594% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Syria was Russia’s 144th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 128th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0007% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0020% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 46.05% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (9.52% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 34.73% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (8.29% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 11.12% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (7.82% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.55% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.89% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.98% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (7.75% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $6,549,861;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $1,348,216;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $821,794;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $386,988.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $12,306,314;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $8,922,858;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $8,776,833;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $1,406,548;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $707,277;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $686,355;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $564,740;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $564,700;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $370,669;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $356,291;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $330,632;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $329,634.

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.04% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (0.00% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
