Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Ukraine was $3,708,638,142, down 0.44% ($16,305,938) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2019 totaled $2,424,558,982, up 4.91% ($113,431,630) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $1,284,079,160, down 9.18% ($129,737,568) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2019 was $1,140,479,822, a 27.10% increase ($243,169,198) over the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Ukraine was Russia’s 12th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (up from 14th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.3166% of Russia’s total trade (up from 2.1794% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Ukraine was Russia’s 14th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (up from 16th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.4062% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.0971% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Ukraine was Russia’s 10th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 2.1645% of Russia’s total imports (down from 2.3289% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 51.42% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (49.56% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 16.44% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (16.46% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 11.13% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (10.92% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 7.38% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (8.25% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 7.14% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (7.88% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.91% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (3.39% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $27,124,392;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $18,860,112;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $13,805,287;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:
