Russia’s Trade with China

In the 2nd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with China was $14,780,413,690, down 3.45% ($528,520,787) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2016 were $7,006,589,215, down 10.23% ($798,761,153) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from China in the 2nd quarter of 2016 totaled $7,773,824,475, up 3.60% ($270,240,366) from the 2nd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade with China went from a surplus of $301,766,259 in the 2nd quarter of 2015, to a deficit of $767,235,260 in the 2nd quarter of 2016.

China was Russia’s largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 13.5801% of Russia’s total trade (up from 11.2289% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

China was Russia’s 2nd largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 10.5445% of Russia’s total exports (up from 8.5261% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

China was Russia’s largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2015), accounting for 18.3384% of Russia’s total imports (up from 16.7533% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to China

The major share of Russian exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2016 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 70.01% of Russia’s total exports to China (71.50% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 13.04% of Russia’s total exports to China (10.19% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.52% of Russia’s total exports to China (6.08% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.87% of Russia’s total exports to China (5.68% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 4.53% of Russia’s total exports to China (4.19% in the 2nd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.63% of Russia’s total exports to China (1.52% in the 2nd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $124,857,626;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - an increase of $78,152,135;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $45,324,136;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $26,638,216;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $23,024,093.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to China in the 2nd quarter of 2016 over the 2nd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $157,442,477;
