Russia’s Trade with Cuba

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Cuba totaled $53,911,992, up 40.25% ($15,473,421) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 totaled $37,840,255, up 39.60% ($10,733,519) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 totaled $16,071,737, up 41.83% ($4,739,902) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was $21,768,518, a 37.99% increase ($5,993,617) over the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Cuba was Russia’s 95th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 105th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0442% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0303% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Cuba was Russia’s 91st largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 99th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0526% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0341% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Cuba was Russia’s 87th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 95th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0322% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0239% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Cuba

The major share of Russian exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 72.53% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (62.70% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 14.46% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (0.00% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.84% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (16.13% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.16% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (11.43% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.71% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (6.69% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.16% of Russia’s total exports to Cuba (0.04% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $17,732,334;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $5,461,169;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $425,991;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $124,786.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $4,030,638;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $2,193,146;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $1,903,559;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $1,688,944;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $1,022,719;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $682,632;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $580,559;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $375,162;
  • Tin and articles thereof (HS code 80) - a decrease of $175,247.

Russia’s Imports from Cuba

The major share of Russian imports from Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 80.32% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (99.90% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 19.65% of Russia’s total imports from Cuba (0.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Cuba in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $3,146,608;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - an increase of $1,566,547;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $277,033;
