Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Iran totaled $703,336,138, up 110.76% ($369,626,787) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2016 totaled $672,769,843, up 126.08% ($375,188,083) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $30,566,295, down 15.39% ($5,561,296) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was $642,203,548, a 145.63% increase ($380,749,379) over the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Iran was Russia’s 33rd largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 50th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.5769% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.2629% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Iran was Russia’s 26th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 41st in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.9351% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.3742% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Iran was Russia’s 78th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 72nd in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0612% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0762% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 44.10% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (21.10% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 15.59% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (15.07% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 10.26% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (48.20% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 6.44% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (13.89% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.17% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (1.16% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $234,899,544;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $60,075,799;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $47,524,601;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $8,383,289;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $7,372,076;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $2,369,679.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $82,771,198;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $50,360,986;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $4,713,847;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $3,311,557.

Russia’s Imports from Iran

The major share of Russian imports from Iran in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 68.58% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (45.28% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 16.02% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (19.71% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 8.10% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (13.55% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.56% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (16.20% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
