Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Japan was $4,232,575,981, down 10.64% ($503,966,783) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $2,344,106,640, down 28.32% ($926,128,323) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 totaled $1,888,469,341, up 28.79% ($422,161,540) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was $455,637,299, a 74.74% decrease ($1,348,289,863) over the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.4715% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.7321% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Japan was Russia’s 11th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (down from 7th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.2582% of Russia’s total exports (down from 4.1122% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Japan was Russia’s 7th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.7786% of Russia’s total imports (up from 3.0942% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 70.22% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (77.87% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.34% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (7.23% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.16% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (5.89% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 5.07% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.29% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.13% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.43% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);

  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $29,132,877;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $20,709,715;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $16,225,098;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $12,616,606.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $898,373,961;
  • Ships, boats and floating structures (HS code 89) - a decrease of $69,601,557;
