Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 3rd quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $5,496,457,007, up 10.35% ($515,619,692) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2016 were $2,455,748,162, down 6.06% ($158,419,067) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 3rd quarter of 2016 totaled $3,040,708,845, up 28.48% ($674,038,759) from the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade with the US went from a surplus of $247,497,143 in the 3rd quarter of 2015, to a deficit of $584,960,683 in the 3rd quarter of 2016.

The US was Russia’s 5th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 7th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 4.5081% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.9246% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The US was Russia’s 9th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.4134% of Russia’s total exports (up from 3.2872% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (up from 4th in the 3rd quarter of 2015), accounting for 6.0841% of Russia’s total imports (up from 4.9941% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2016 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 41.45% of Russia’s total exports to the US (43.34% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 32.89% of Russia’s total exports to the US (25.31% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.42% of Russia’s total exports to the US (16.35% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 3.72% of Russia’s total exports to the US (6.46% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.18% of Russia’s total exports to the US (3.67% in the 3rd quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.43% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.17% in the 3rd quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $164,233,534;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $43,074,837.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 3rd quarter of 2016 over the 3rd quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $134,119,645;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $110,033,619;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $77,582,841;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $20,936,033;
  • Other base metals; cermets; articles thereof (HS code 81) - a decrease of $10,452,895;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $7,997,784.
