Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with Syria was $34,403,537, down 52.96% ($38,731,773) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $33,642,629, down 53.27% ($38,347,195) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2016 were $760,908, down 33.57% ($384,578) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $32,881,721, a 53.59% decrease ($37,962,617) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

Syria was Russia’s 110th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 85th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0252% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0559% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Syria was Russia’s 94th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 72nd in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0401% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0873% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Syria was Russia’s 130th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (down from 125th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 0.0015% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0024% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 19.69% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (4.85% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.91% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.41% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.56% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (14.08% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.22% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (1.62% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.38% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (2.15% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $6,108,773;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $4,386,046;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $1,095,907;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $619,085;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - an increase of $249,410;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $113,330.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - a decrease of $8,785,622;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $1,508,425;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $949,269;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $701,788;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $417,148;
