Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 4th quarter of 2016, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $6,079,678,897, up 17.68% ($913,448,201) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $2,946,429,615, up 23.18% ($554,475,301) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 4th quarter of 2016 totaled $3,133,249,282, up 12.94% ($358,972,900) from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Russia’s trade deficit with the US in the 4th quarter of 2016 was $186,819,667, a 51.14% decrease ($195,502,401) over the 4th quarter of 2015.

The US was Russia’s 5th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 8th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 4.4615% of Russia’s total trade (up from 3.9507% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The US was Russia’s 7th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2016 (up from 11th in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 3.5145% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.9018% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2016 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2015), accounting for 5.9759% of Russia’s total imports (up from 5.7394% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 4th quarter of 2016 (and in the 4th quarter of 2015) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 37.46% of Russia’s total exports to the US (26.97% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 29.13% of Russia’s total exports to the US (22.59% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 13.41% of Russia’s total exports to the US (25.50% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 7.23% of Russia’s total exports to the US (4.71% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.38% of Russia’s total exports to the US (7.41% in the 4th quarter of 2015);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.49% of Russia’s total exports to the US (1.40% in the 4th quarter of 2015).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 4th quarter of 2016 over the 4th quarter of 2015 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $275,827,518;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $100,545,939;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $25,623,537;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $10,915,009;
