Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 1st quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Japan totaled $3,941,532,890, up 6.73% ($248,510,012) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 were $2,278,141,358, down 2.79% ($65,504,603) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 totaled $1,663,391,532, up 23.27% ($314,014,615) from the 1st quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 was $614,749,826, a 38.17% decrease ($379,519,218) over the 1st quarter of 2016.

Japan was Russia’s 9th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 7th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.0661% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.8041% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Japan was Russia’s 11th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2017 (down from 8th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.7337% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.8244% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Japan was Russia’s 6th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2017 (up from 7th in the 1st quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.6788% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.7695% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 (and in the 1st quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 74.84% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (83.87% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 13.44% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (7.24% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.82% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.43% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 4.81% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.59% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.40% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.08% in the 1st quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $133,195,258;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $48,793,888.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2017 over the 1st quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $232,363,722;
  • Ores, slag and ash (HS code 26) - a decrease of $28,502,887.

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.45% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (13.57% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.89% of Russia’s total imports from Japan (3.10% in the 1st quarter of 2016);
