Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 2nd quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Iran was $337,956,814, down 3.95% ($13,916,533) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2017 were $234,025,484, down 19.45% ($56,514,771) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2017 totaled $103,931,330, up 69.45% ($42,598,238) from the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2017 was $130,094,154, a 43.24% decrease ($99,113,009) over the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Iran was Russia’s 54th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 48th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2418% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.3233% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Iran was Russia’s 48th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (down from 39th in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.2787% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.4372% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Iran was Russia’s 56th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (up from 61st in the 2nd quarter of 2016), accounting for 0.1863% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.1447% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 49.67% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (28.52% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 22.85% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (12.27% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 18.17% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (8.89% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.29% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (47.32% in the 2nd quarter of 2016);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.11% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (2.54% in the 2nd quarter of 2016).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $16,411,616;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $16,337,442;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $8,391,819;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $2,063,312;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $1,613,329;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $1,483,326;
  • Wadding, felt and nonwovens; special yarns, twine, cordage, ropes and cables and articles thereof (HS code 56) - an increase of $922,523;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $737,629.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2017 over the 2nd quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $93,602,984;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $26,784,929;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $3,198,403;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $2,270,592;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - a decrease of $2,128,936;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - a decrease of $1,371,677;
  • Residues and waste from the food industries; prepared animal feed (HS code 23) - a decrease of $1,161,889;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $766,254.
