Russia’s Trade with Japan

In the 4th quarter of 2017, Russia’s trade with Japan totaled $4,898,225,264, up 9.19% ($412,067,778) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s exports to Japan in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $2,751,866,816, up 6.37% ($164,769,520) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s imports from Japan in the 4th quarter of 2017 totaled $2,146,358,448, up 13.02% ($247,298,258) from the 4th quarter of 2016.

Russia’s trade surplus with Japan in the 4th quarter of 2017 was $605,508,368, a 11.99% decrease ($82,528,738) over the 4th quarter of 2016.

Japan was Russia’s 8th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2017 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.9305% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.2921% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Japan was Russia’s 11th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2017 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 2.6752% of Russia’s total exports (down from 3.0859% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Japan was Russia’s 7th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2017 (just as in the 4th quarter of 2016), accounting for 3.3391% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.6220% in the 4th quarter of 2016).

Russia’s Exports to Japan

The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 4th quarter of 2017 (and in the 4th quarter of 2016) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 71.72% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (71.75% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.38% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (12.08% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 6.30% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (4.14% in the 4th quarter of 2016);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 5.96% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (2.14% in the 4th quarter of 2016);

  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $108,636,411;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $61,795,460;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $29,828,437.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 4th quarter of 2017 over the 4th quarter of 2016 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $41,330,935;
