Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 1st quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $31,227,366, down 58.03% ($43,176,247) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 were $30,306,368, down 59.13% ($43,849,013) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 totaled $920,998, up 271.02% ($672,766) from the 1st quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 was $29,385,370, a 60.24% decrease ($44,521,779) over the 1st quarter of 2017.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 112th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 88th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0198% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0579% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 92nd largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2018 (down from 75th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0294% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0890% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 129th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2018 (up from 140th in the 1st quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0017% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0005% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 23.43% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (11.81% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 21.54% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (15.07% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 5.47% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.33% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.12% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (0.61% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.81% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (17.97% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $512,443;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $313,109;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $251,627;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $158,057;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $92,230.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $26,728,259;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $12,945,004;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $4,432,331;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $1,577,036;
  • Ceramic products (HS code 69) - a decrease of $319,919;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $213,954;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $183,724;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $111,025.

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 (and in the 1st quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 93.20% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (99.96% in the 1st quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.86% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.00% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2018 over the 1st quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:
