Russia’s Trade with Brazil

In the 2nd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Brazil totaled $1,404,436,315, up 1.91% ($26,289,620) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $764,896,469, up 36.12% ($202,957,100) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2018 were $639,539,846, down 21.64% ($176,667,480) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade balance with Brazil went from a deficit of $254,267,957 in the 2nd quarter of 2017, to a surplus of $125,356,623 in the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Brazil was Russia’s 26th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (down from 20th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.8217% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.9861% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Brazil was Russia’s 31st largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.6941% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.6692% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Brazil was Russia’s 23rd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (down from 17th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 1.0535% of Russia’s total imports (down from 1.4631% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Brazil

The major share of Russian exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 69.35% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (73.88% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 25.48% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (18.23% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.96% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (4.01% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.92% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (3.27% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $110,771,191;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $71,777,142;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $20,636,033;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $4,523,012;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $2,345,216.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $5,354,215;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $3,416,119.

Russia’s Imports from Brazil

The major share of Russian imports from Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 55.18% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (82.59% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 17.21% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (7.11% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.44% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (3.39% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.48% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (2.75% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).
