Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 2nd quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Iran totaled $469,419,428, up 38.90% ($131,462,614) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $332,049,915, up 41.89% ($98,024,431) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2018 totaled $137,369,513, up 32.17% ($33,438,183) from the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2018 was $194,680,402, a 49.65% increase ($64,586,248) over the 2nd quarter of 2017.

Iran was Russia’s 51st largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 54th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.2747% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.2418% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Iran was Russia’s 47th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 48th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.3013% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.2787% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Iran was Russia’s 54th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (up from 56th in the 2nd quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.2263% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.1863% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2018 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 59.57% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (49.67% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 18.50% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (5.29% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 12.36% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (22.85% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.51% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (18.17% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.56% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (3.11% in the 2nd quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $49,337,379;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $30,435,870;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $26,051,570;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $12,595,644;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - an increase of $9,397,494;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $8,952,746;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $3,353,934;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 2nd quarter of 2018 over the 2nd quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $20,005,546;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $13,205,801;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $8,575,785;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $2,946,475;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $1,311,939.

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 13.10% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (39.04% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 9.74% of Russia’s total imports from Iran (6.17% in the 2nd quarter of 2017);
