Russia’s Trade with Ethiopia

In the 4th quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Ethiopia was $19,536,854, down 47.18% ($17,453,468) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 were $13,826,525, down 50.90% ($14,332,377) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 were $5,710,329, down 35.34% ($3,121,091) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 was $8,116,196, a 58.01% decrease ($11,211,286) over the 4th quarter of 2017.

Ethiopia was Russia’s 126th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 107th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0105% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0221% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 121st largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 96th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0111% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0274% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 108th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 98th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0092% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0137% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Ethiopia

The major share of Russian exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 56.34% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (0.19% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 42.14% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (27.67% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.15% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (0.97% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.12% of Russia’s total exports to Ethiopia (70.53% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $7,774,803;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - an increase of $43,640.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $15,389,982;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $2,170,887;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $2,066,481;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $1,793,298;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $216,354;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $215,454;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $115,684;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $104,611;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $66,713.

Russia’s Imports from Ethiopia

The major share of Russian imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 91.54% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (97.35% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 7.74% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (2.65% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted (HS code 61) - an increase of $174,569;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $91,519;

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $2,664,167;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $779,909.
