Russia’s Trade with Syria

In the 4th quarter of 2018, Russia’s trade with Syria totaled $97,863,979, up 121.71% ($53,723,589) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 totaled $97,653,628, up 124.38% ($54,131,910) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 were $210,351, down 66.00% ($408,321) from the 4th quarter of 2017.

Russia’s trade surplus with Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 was $97,443,277, a 127.12% increase ($54,540,231) over the 4th quarter of 2017.

Syria was Russia’s 90th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2018 (up from 105th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0524% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0264% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Syria was Russia’s 80th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2018 (up from 91st in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0784% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0423% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Syria was Russia’s 150th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2018 (down from 135th in the 4th quarter of 2017), accounting for 0.0003% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0010% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

Russia’s Exports to Syria

The major share of Russian exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 31.67% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (37.56% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 15.94% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (36.02% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 14.60% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (12.45% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.29% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.67% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.99% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (0.57% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 0.25% of Russia’s total exports to Syria (1.45% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $9,749,354;
  • Printed books, newspapers, pictures and other products of the printing industry; manuscripts, typescripts and plans (HS code 49) - an increase of $9,171,233;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $9,151,814;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $7,707,602;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $5,806,788;
  • Copper and articles thereof (HS code 74) - an increase of $1,464,747;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $938,637;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - an increase of $833,486;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $7,680,844;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $725,200;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $594,384;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $393,686;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $390,485.

Russia’s Imports from Syria

The major share of Russian imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 (and in the 4th quarter of 2017) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 66.26% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (89.29% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 15.69% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (5.32% in the 4th quarter of 2017);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 9.96% of Russia’s total imports from Syria (4.69% in the 4th quarter of 2017).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Syria in the 4th quarter of 2018 over the 4th quarter of 2017 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials (HS code 68) - an increase of $17,013;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $14,856;

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $49,770;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $31,230;
  • Preparations of cereals, flour, starch or milk; bakers’ wares (HS code 19) - a decrease of $27,750;
  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - a decrease of $22,153;
  • Sugars and sugar confectionery (HS code 17) - a decrease of $4,118;
