Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $25,419,171, down 18.60% ($5,808,195) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2019 were $24,151,517, down 20.31% ($6,154,851) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $1,267,654, up 37.64% ($346,656) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2019 was $22,883,863, a 22.12% decrease ($6,501,507) over the 1st quarter of 2018.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 111th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 112th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0161% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0198% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 97th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (down from 92nd in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0231% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0294% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 129th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0024% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0017% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 49.91% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (23.43% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 20.34% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (21.54% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 15.57% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (39.92% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 6.35% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.81% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.93% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (5.47% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.08% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (2.12% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $4,246,448;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $1,130,056;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $1,059,064;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $529,366;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - an increase of $278,908;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $253,617;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $148,504.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $8,340,372;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $2,745,637;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $421,610;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $274,854;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $222,616;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $176,583;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $109,482;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $91,322.

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 96.54% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (93.20% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.56% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.00% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (1.86% in the 1st quarter of 2018).
