Russia’s Trade with Iran

In the 1st quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Iran totaled $542,917,148, up 14.12% ($67,155,244) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Iran in the 1st quarter of 2019 totaled $393,734,713, up 32.48% ($96,523,339) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Iran in the 1st quarter of 2019 were $149,182,435, down 16.45% ($29,368,095) from the 1st quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Iran in the 1st quarter of 2019 was $244,552,278, a 106.09% increase ($125,891,434) over the 1st quarter of 2018.

Iran was Russia’s 48th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 50th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.3449% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.3018% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Iran was Russia’s 44th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2019 (up from 49th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.3772% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.2885% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Iran was Russia’s 50th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2019 (down from 45th in the 1st quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.2812% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3270% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Iran

The major share of Russian exports to Iran in the 1st quarter of 2019 (and in the 1st quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 78.82% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (52.97% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 8.60% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (10.86% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 7.97% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (14.61% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.57% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (3.17% in the 1st quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.26% of Russia’s total exports to Iran (17.34% in the 1st quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $109,674,788;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $40,477,441;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $6,999,917;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $6,368,958;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $4,334,233;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $3,321,566;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - an increase of $1,470,646;
  • Pulp of wood or of other fibrous cellulosic material; waste and scrap of paper or paperboard (HS code 47) - an increase of $1,218,398.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Iran in the 1st quarter of 2019 over the 1st quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $50,116,117;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $9,848,643;
  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - a decrease of $8,940,952;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $3,166,902;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $2,139,683;
  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - a decrease of $2,036,606.
