Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $26,244,194, down 26.82% ($9,617,164) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $25,007,460, down 28.28% ($9,860,061) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 totaled $1,236,734, up 24.44% ($242,897) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 was $23,770,726, a 29.83% decrease ($10,102,958) over the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 111th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 109th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0164% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0210% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 97th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 96th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0248% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0316% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 130th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 129th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0021% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0016% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 39.91% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (23.15% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 35.55% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (26.38% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 18.39% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (35.66% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.03% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.86% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.60% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.63% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.41% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (8.25% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $1,911,468;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $297,304;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $183,249;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $178,999;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $164,797;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $135,849;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $77,049.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $7,937,888;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $2,610,151;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $472,675;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $458,888;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $187,894;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $82,937.

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 1.37% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.00% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (23.00% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $403,801;
