Russia’s Trade with Brazil

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Brazil was $1,171,908,226, down 16.56% ($232,528,089) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $573,024,954, down 25.08% ($191,871,515) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $598,883,272, down 6.36% ($40,656,574) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade balance with Brazil went from a surplus of $125,356,623 in the 2nd quarter of 2018, to a deficit of $25,858,318 in the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Brazil was Russia’s 32nd largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 26th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.7320% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.8217% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Brazil was Russia’s 38th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (down from 31st in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.5687% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.6941% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Brazil was Russia’s 21st largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (up from 23rd in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 1.0095% of Russia’s total imports (down from 1.0535% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Brazil

The major share of Russian exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 78.65% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (69.35% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 15.26% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (25.48% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.01% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (1.92% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.98% of Russia’s total exports to Brazil (2.96% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $6,651,876;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - an increase of $2,157,938.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $85,486,867;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $76,647,365;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - a decrease of $21,928,596;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $9,538,086;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $3,472,211;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $3,310,712;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $2,040,679;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $2,004,900.

The major share of Russian imports from Brazil in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 76.68% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (55.18% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 8.29% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (3.48% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.49% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (17.21% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 5.31% of Russia’s total imports from Brazil (5.44% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).
