Russia’s Trade with the US

In the 2nd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with the US totaled $7,224,296,409, up 4.64% ($320,433,514) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2019 totaled $3,624,431,412, up 25.66% ($740,001,615) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from the US in the 2nd quarter of 2019 were $3,599,864,997, down 10.44% ($419,568,101) from the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade balance with the US went from a deficit of $1,135,003,301 in the 2nd quarter of 2018, to a surplus of $24,566,415 in the 2nd quarter of 2019.

The US was Russia’s 5th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 4.5127% of Russia’s total trade (up from 4.0394% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The US was Russia’s 7th largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (up from 12th in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 3.5970% of Russia’s total exports (up from 2.6173% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The US was Russia’s 3rd largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2018), accounting for 6.0681% of Russia’s total imports (down from 6.6209% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to the US

The major share of Russian exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2019 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 54.24% of Russia’s total exports to the US (36.41% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 17.11% of Russia’s total exports to the US (28.36% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 12.92% of Russia’s total exports to the US (13.39% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 8.26% of Russia’s total exports to the US (11.16% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.14% of Russia’s total exports to the US (6.73% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 1.37% of Russia’s total exports to the US (2.04% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $903,600,026;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $118,796,826;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $13,172,132;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $11,754,057.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to the US in the 2nd quarter of 2019 over the 2nd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $228,748,325;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $39,390,283;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $22,364,514;
  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - a decrease of $19,330,128;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $16,406,293.

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 17.83% of Russia’s total imports from the US (15.18% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.96% of Russia’s total imports from the US (3.02% in the 2nd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.28% of Russia’s total imports from the US (2.57% in the 2nd quarter of 2018).
