Russia’s Trade with Costa Rica

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Costa Rica totaled $27,093,612, up 14.13% ($3,354,451) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $9,791,325, up 74.16% ($4,169,268) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 were $17,302,287, down 4.50% ($814,817) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $7,510,962, a 39.89% decrease ($4,984,085) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Costa Rica was Russia’s 122nd largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0163% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0138% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 125th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 131st in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0095% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0050% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 91st largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0277% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0303% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Costa Rica

The major share of Russian exports to Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 94.15% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (24.31% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 4.21% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (0.92% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 0.73% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (1.13% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.00% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (72.62% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $360,789;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $49,097;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - an increase of $47,098;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $31,622;
  • Toys, games and sports requisites; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 95) - an increase of $29,975.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $3,532,002;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - a decrease of $550,876;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $35,212.

Russia’s Imports from Costa Rica

The major share of Russian imports from Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 47.55% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (55.98% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 46.48% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (35.31% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.77% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (1.05% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 1.08% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (1.54% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

  • Preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants (HS code 20) - an increase of $132,596;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $130,901;
  • Miscellaneous manufactured articles (HS code 96) - an increase of $102,211.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:
