Russia’s Trade with North Korea

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with North Korea totaled $10,250,053, up 58.97% ($3,802,261) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $9,316,059, up 59.96% ($3,492,147) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $933,994, up 49.71% ($310,114) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $8,382,065, a 61.19% increase ($3,182,033) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

North Korea was Russia’s 140th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 142nd in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0062% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0037% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

North Korea was Russia’s 127th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 130th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0090% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0052% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

North Korea was Russia’s 133rd largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 135th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0015% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0010% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to North Korea

The major share of Russian exports to North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 62.45% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (51.01% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 14.45% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (31.24% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 12.19% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (5.00% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 8.67% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (11.20% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.03% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (0.84% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $2,797,163;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $786,026;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $311,649;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - an increase of $286,144;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $132,623;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $62,020;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $49,530;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $43,600.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $811,405;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $142,721.

Russia’s Imports from North Korea

The major share of Russian imports from North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 45.57% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (6.92% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.99% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (20.82% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.02% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (0.12% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 1.41% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (0.00% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $7,418;

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $75,400;
  • Musical instruments; parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 92) - a decrease of $37,145;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $37,017;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $6,097;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $2,850;
  • Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (HS code 33) - a decrease of $2,806.
