Russia’s Trade with Sri Lanka

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Sri Lanka totaled $88,538,300, up 2.41% ($2,079,807) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 totaled $17,923,009, up 42.16% ($5,314,976) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 were $70,615,291, down 4.38% ($3,235,169) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $52,692,282, a 13.96% decrease ($8,550,145) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Sri Lanka was Russia’s 86th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (up from 88th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0534% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0502% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Sri Lanka was Russia’s 115th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (just as in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0173% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0112% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Sri Lanka was Russia’s 64th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (down from 62nd in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.1129% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.1233% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Sri Lanka

The major share of Russian exports to Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 32.79% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (20.69% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 28.46% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (14.72% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 17.74% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (45.54% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 14.69% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (13.67% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.00% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (2.38% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.34% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (1.43% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $3,367,548;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $1,567,728;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - an increase of $1,111,598;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $930,305;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $541,684;
  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $362,574;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $241,171;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $215,776;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $168,003.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $2,926,393;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $145,956;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $136,431.

Russia’s Imports from Sri Lanka

The major share of Russian imports from Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 47.09% of Russia’s total imports from Sri Lanka (51.13% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 44.25% of Russia’s total imports from Sri Lanka (39.91% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 6.45% of Russia’s total imports from Sri Lanka (7.14% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 1.76% of Russia’s total imports from Sri Lanka (1.43% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, not knitted or crocheted (HS code 62) - an increase of $1,320,922;
  • Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted (HS code 61) - an increase of $1,130,150;
  • Other vegetable textile fibers; paper yarn and woven fabric of paper yarn (HS code 53) - an increase of $559,398.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Sri Lanka in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - a decrease of $5,028,104;
  • Headgear and parts thereof (HS code 65) - a decrease of $1,133,815;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $1,031,505.
