Russia’s Trade with Ukraine

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with Ukraine was $2,480,558,876, down 32.61% ($1,200,181,209) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2019 were $1,259,574,255, down 45.58% ($1,054,819,186) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2019 were $1,220,984,621, down 10.64% ($145,362,023) from the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2019 was $38,589,634, a 95.93% decrease ($909,457,163) over the 3rd quarter of 2018.

Ukraine was Russia’s 16th largest trading partner in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (down from 13th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 1.4955% of Russia’s total trade (down from 2.1391% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Ukraine was Russia’s 16th largest export market in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (down from 14th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 1.2191% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.0628% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Ukraine was Russia’s 12th largest supplier in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (down from 9th in the 3rd quarter of 2018), accounting for 1.9521% of Russia’s total imports (down from 2.2820% in the 3rd quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Ukraine

The major share of Russian exports to Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2019 (and in the 3rd quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 25.59% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (16.38% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 23.62% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (15.38% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 14.63% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (6.43% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 12.31% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (45.45% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 11.45% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (8.70% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.86% of Russia’s total exports to Ukraine (3.49% in the 3rd quarter of 2018);

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Ukraine in the 3rd quarter of 2019 over the 3rd quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Railway or tramway locomotives, rolling-stock and parts thereof; railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings and parts thereof; mechanical (including electro-mechanical) traffic signalling equipment of all kinds (HS code 86) - an increase of $14,984,745;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $6,208,245;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $5,376,267;
