Russia’s Trade with North Korea

In the 4th quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with North Korea was $9,515,451, down 43.09% ($7,205,558) from the 4th quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 4th quarter of 2019 were $8,337,269, down 48.65% ($7,899,661) from the 4th quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from North Korea in the 4th quarter of 2019 totaled $1,178,182, up 143.39% ($694,103) from the 4th quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with North Korea in the 4th quarter of 2019 was $7,159,087, a 54.55% decrease ($8,593,764) over the 4th quarter of 2018.

North Korea was Russia’s 130th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2019 (up from 131st in the 4th quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0053% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0089% in the 4th quarter of 2018).

North Korea was Russia’s 117th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2019 (up from 118th in the 4th quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0075% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0130% in the 4th quarter of 2018).

North Korea was Russia’s 127th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2019 (up from 138th in the 4th quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0017% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0008% in the 4th quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to North Korea

The major share of Russian exports to North Korea in the 4th quarter of 2019 (and in the 4th quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 52.72% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (77.17% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 30.48% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (20.45% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 10.94% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (1.84% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 4.55% of Russia’s total exports to North Korea (0.49% in the 4th quarter of 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 4th quarter of 2019 over the 4th quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - an increase of $605,854;
  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - an increase of $559,974;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $143,412;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $111,497;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $109,022;
  • Live animals (HS code 01) - an increase of $80,922;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $38,706;
  • Meat and edible meat offal (HS code 02) - an increase of $38,262;
  • Articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials (HS code 68) - an increase of $38,139;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - an increase of $31,749;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $27,751.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to North Korea in the 4th quarter of 2019 over the 4th quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $8,119,281;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $1,091,729;
  • Products of the milling industry; malt; starches; inulin; wheat gluten (HS code 11) - a decrease of $482,059.

Russia’s Imports from North Korea

The major share of Russian imports from North Korea in the 4th quarter of 2019 (and in the 4th quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 48.25% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (11.91% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.63% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (0.43% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 1.03% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (0.00% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.17% of Russia’s total imports from North Korea (2.71% in the 4th quarter of 2018).
