Russia’s Trade with South Africa

In the 4th quarter of 2019, Russia’s trade with South Africa was $230,778,893, down 14.41% ($38,851,590) from the 4th quarter of 2018.

Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2019 were $50,618,278, down 17.62% ($10,822,984) from the 4th quarter of 2018.

Russia’s imports from South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2019 were $180,160,615, down 13.46% ($28,028,606) from the 4th quarter of 2018.

Russia’s trade deficit with South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2019 was $129,542,337, a 11.72% decrease ($17,205,622) over the 4th quarter of 2018.

South Africa was Russia’s 70th largest trading partner in the 4th quarter of 2019 (down from 69th in the 4th quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.1283% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1443% in the 4th quarter of 2018).

South Africa was Russia’s 85th largest export market in the 4th quarter of 2019 (up from 86th in the 4th quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.0453% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0494% in the 4th quarter of 2018).

South Africa was Russia’s 50th largest supplier in the 4th quarter of 2019 (down from 44th in the 4th quarter of 2018), accounting for 0.2648% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3339% in the 4th quarter of 2018).

Russia’s Exports to South Africa

The major share of Russian exports to South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2019 (and in the 4th quarter of 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 69.97% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (13.25% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 17.48% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (23.25% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 4.14% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (27.67% in the 4th quarter of 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 3.56% of Russia’s total exports to South Africa (7.30% in the 4th quarter of 2018);

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to South Africa in the 4th quarter of 2019 over the 4th quarter of 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $14,905,725;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $12,796,842;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $5,210,023;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - a decrease of $1,649,239;

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $1,142,985;
  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - a decrease of $1,090,525;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $928,773;
