Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In 2019, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan totaled $126,267,528, up 2.92% ($3,582,724) from 2018.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2019 totaled $120,961,269, up 1.91% ($2,268,687) from 2018.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2019 totaled $5,306,259, up 32.91% ($1,314,037) from 2018.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in 2019 was $115,655,010, a 0.83% increase ($954,650) over 2018.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 110th largest trading partner in 2019 (up from 116th in 2018), accounting for 0.0189% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0178% in 2018).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 99th largest export market in 2019 (up from 100th in 2018), accounting for 0.0286% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0264% in 2018).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 129th largest supplier in 2019 (up from 131st in 2018), accounting for 0.0022% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0017% in 2018).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in 2019 (and in 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 33.21% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (31.45% in 2018);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 32.40% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (25.96% in 2018);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 19.54% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (29.50% in 2018);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.76% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (3.74% in 2018);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 2.69% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (4.55% in 2018);

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $2,827,335;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - an increase of $1,169,250;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $882,658;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - an increase of $849,289;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $843,806;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $481,946.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in 2019 over 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - a decrease of $12,404,420;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $2,716,169;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $791,166;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $424,135;
  • Soap, organic surface-active agents, washing preparations, lubricating preparations, artificial waxes, prepared waxes, polishing or scouring preparations, candles and similar articles, modeling pastes, "dental waxes" and dental preparations with a basis of plaster (HS code 34) - a decrease of $378,025;
  • Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (HS code 85) - a decrease of $372,467.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in 2019 (and in 2018) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 1.71% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (0.56% in 2018);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 0.02% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (6.16% in 2018).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in 2019 over 2018 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $1,088,388;
  • Furskins and artificial fur; manufactures thereof (HS code 43) - an increase of $276,673;
