Russia’s Trade with Afghanistan

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Afghanistan was $22,575,839, down 11.19% ($2,843,332) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 were $21,071,204, down 12.75% ($3,080,313) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $1,504,635, up 18.69% ($236,981) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade surplus with Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 was $19,566,569, a 14.50% decrease ($3,317,294) over the 1st quarter of 2019.

Afghanistan was Russia’s 113th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 111th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0159% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0161% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 99th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 97th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0237% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0231% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Afghanistan was Russia’s 122nd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 129th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0028% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0024% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Afghanistan

The major share of Russian exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 38.61% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (20.34% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 37.51% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (49.91% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 18.77% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (15.57% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 2.42% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (3.93% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.79% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (1.08% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 0.02% of Russia’s total exports to Afghanistan (6.35% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal (HS code 44) - an increase of $3,326,818;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $196,757;
  • Cocoa and cocoa preparations (HS code 18) - an increase of $190,819;
  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - an increase of $115,580;
  • Explosives; pyrotechnic products; matches; pyrophoric alloys; certain combustible preparations (HS code 36) - an increase of $110,000;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $89,916.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $4,122,982;
  • Articles of iron or steel (HS code 73) - a decrease of $1,213,455;
  • Miscellaneous chemical products (HS code 38) - a decrease of $476,307;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $441,638;
  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $314,359;
  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - a decrease of $278,929;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $103,834;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $90,833;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - a decrease of $76,139.

Russia’s Imports from Afghanistan

The major share of Russian imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 95.21% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (96.54% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 0.00% of Russia’s total imports from Afghanistan (2.56% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - an increase of $301,222;
  • Furskins and artificial fur; manufactures thereof (HS code 43) - an increase of $72,053.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Afghanistan in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - a decrease of $32,500;
  • Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - a decrease of $8,022.
