Russia’s Trade with Canada

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Canada was $276,768,670, down 22.56% ($80,621,286) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Canada in the 1st quarter of 2020 were $81,761,611, down 61.04% ($128,081,811) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Canada in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $195,007,059, up 32.17% ($47,460,525) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with Canada went from a surplus of $62,296,888 in the 1st quarter of 2019, to a deficit of $113,245,448 in the 1st quarter of 2020.

Canada was Russia’s 61st largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 59th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1947% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.2270% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Canada was Russia’s 73rd largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 57th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0919% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.2010% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Canada was Russia’s 43rd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 51st in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.3668% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.2782% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Canada

The major share of Russian exports to Canada in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 49.37% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (14.49% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 18.45% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (69.15% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 9.03% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (4.56% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 6.49% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (3.82% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 5.51% of Russia’s total exports to Canada (1.79% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
