Russia’s Trade with Costa Rica

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Costa Rica totaled $34,153,796, up 11.53% ($3,532,139) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $8,751,470, up 29.29% ($1,982,478) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Costa Rica in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $25,402,326, up 6.50% ($1,549,661) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade deficit with Costa Rica in the 1st quarter of 2020 was $16,650,856, a 2.53% decrease ($432,817) over the 1st quarter of 2019.

Costa Rica was Russia’s 105th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 109th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0240% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0195% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 119th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 128th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0098% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0065% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Costa Rica was Russia’s 81st largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 84th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0478% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0450% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Costa Rica

The major share of Russian exports to Costa Rica in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 86.58% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (17.95% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 6.91% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (7.48% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 3.71% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (71.43% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.11% of Russia’s total exports to Costa Rica (1.61% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fertilizers (HS code 31) - an increase of $6,268,140;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $386,689;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $293,962;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $98,676;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - an increase of $78,552;
  • Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof (HS code 84) - an increase of $37,293.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Costa Rica in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $4,804,044;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $128,800;
  • Plastics and articles thereof (HS code 39) - a decrease of $128,460;
  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - a decrease of $54,800;
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof (HS code 87) - a decrease of $48,151.

Russia’s Imports from Costa Rica

The major share of Russian imports from Costa Rica in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 69.39% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (63.55% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 25.97% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (32.41% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 2.25% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (0.54% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.34% of Russia’s total imports from Costa Rica (0.87% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

  • Glass and glassware (HS code 70) - a decrease of $446,240;
