Russia’s Trade with Ethiopia

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Ethiopia was $7,960,986, down 56.45% ($10,319,994) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2020 were $3,720,932, down 73.81% ($10,484,032) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $4,240,054, up 4.02% ($164,038) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with Ethiopia went from a surplus of $10,128,948 in the 1st quarter of 2019, to a deficit of $519,122 in the 1st quarter of 2020.

Ethiopia was Russia’s 135th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 122nd in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0056% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.0116% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 132nd largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 112th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0042% of Russia’s total exports (down from 0.0136% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Ethiopia was Russia’s 106th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 108th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0080% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0077% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Ethiopia

The major share of Russian exports to Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - a decrease of $9,476,953;
  • Cereals (HS code 10) - a decrease of $1,226,024;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $269,845;
  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $175,200.

The major share of Russian imports from Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 87.55% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (88.76% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 12.43% of Russia’s total imports from Ethiopia (11.23% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Ethiopia in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers (HS code 07) - a decrease of $300,988;
  • Footwear, gaiters and the like; parts of such articles (HS code 64) - a decrease of $131,545.
