Russia’s Trade with Nigeria

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Nigeria totaled $85,395,990, up 12.17% ($9,264,476) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $74,670,519, up 5.06% ($3,598,194) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $10,725,471, up 112.00% ($5,666,282) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade surplus with Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2020 was $63,945,048, a 3.13% decrease ($2,068,088) over the 1st quarter of 2019.

Nigeria was Russia’s 83rd largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 85th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0601% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0484% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Nigeria was Russia’s 74th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 76th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0839% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0681% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Nigeria was Russia’s 93rd largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 104th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0202% of Russia’s total imports (up from 0.0095% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Nigeria

The major share of Russian exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 32.05% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (17.93% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 20.09% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (12.95% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 18.45% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (10.71% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 8.00% of Russia’s total exports to Nigeria (52.75% in the 1st quarter of 2019);

  • Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $5,410,018;

  • Tanning or dyeing extracts; dyes, pigments, paints, varnishes, putty and mastics (HS code 32) - an increase of $432,071;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - a decrease of $4,135,215;
  • Pharmaceutical products (HS code 30) - a decrease of $1,976,084;
  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $1,468,341;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $930,145.

Russia’s Imports from Nigeria

The major share of Russian imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 96.16% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (96.61% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 3.80% of Russia’s total imports from Nigeria (3.38% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Nigeria in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:
