Russia’s Trade with Sri Lanka

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Sri Lanka totaled $212,861,827, up 151.96% ($128,378,665) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $147,550,712, up 764.16% ($130,476,301) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter of 2020 were $65,311,115, down 3.11% ($2,097,636) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade balance with Sri Lanka went from a deficit of $50,334,340 in the 1st quarter of 2019, to a surplus of $82,239,597 in the 1st quarter of 2020.

Sri Lanka was Russia’s 68th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 83rd in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1498% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0537% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Sri Lanka was Russia’s 65th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 109th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1658% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0164% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Sri Lanka was Russia’s 66th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 64th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.1229% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.1271% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Sri Lanka

The major share of Russian exports to Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 18.46% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (37.19% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 2.44% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (18.26% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 2.09% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (21.52% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 0.98% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (16.94% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 0.06% of Russia’s total exports to Sri Lanka (1.20% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $20,142,304;
  • Salt; sulfur; earths and stone; plastering materials, lime and cement (HS code 25) - an increase of $2,045,344.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - a decrease of $2,633,584;
  • Rubber and articles thereof (HS code 40) - a decrease of $627,691;
  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - a decrease of $525,199.

Russia’s Imports from Sri Lanka

The major share of Russian imports from Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Textiles, textile products and footwear (HS codes 50-67) - 46.70% of Russia’s total imports from Sri Lanka (39.71% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 44.06% of Russia’s total imports from Sri Lanka (51.27% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 7.27% of Russia’s total imports from Sri Lanka (5.49% in the 1st quarter of 2019);

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:
