Russia’s Trade with Tanzania

In the 1st quarter of 2020, Russia’s trade with Tanzania totaled $41,707,171, up 69.52% ($17,103,515) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s exports to Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 totaled $38,049,089, up 103.15% ($19,319,873) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s imports from Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 were $3,658,082, down 37.73% ($2,216,358) from the 1st quarter of 2019.

Russia’s trade surplus with Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 was $34,391,007, a 167.53% increase ($21,536,231) over the 1st quarter of 2019.

Tanzania was Russia’s 100th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 113th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0293% of Russia’s total trade (up from 0.0156% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Tanzania was Russia’s 86th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2020 (up from 104th in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0428% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0179% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Tanzania was Russia’s 110th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2020 (down from 102nd in the 1st quarter of 2019), accounting for 0.0069% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.0111% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

Russia’s Exports to Tanzania

The major share of Russian exports to Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 90.92% of Russia’s total exports to Tanzania (76.62% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 4.27% of Russia’s total exports to Tanzania (8.73% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 3.59% of Russia’s total exports to Tanzania (13.31% in the 1st quarter of 2019);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 0.98% of Russia’s total exports to Tanzania (1.14% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s exports to Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $20,166,971;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $254,998;
  • Mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes (HS code 27) - an increase of $145,106.

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Paper and paperboard; articles of paper pulp, of paper or of paperboard (HS code 48) - a decrease of $1,115,592;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $215,914.

Russia’s Imports from Tanzania

The major share of Russian imports from Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 (and in the 1st quarter of 2019) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 99.52% of Russia’s total imports from Tanzania (99.96% in the 1st quarter of 2019).

The largest gains in Russia’s imports from Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; miscellaneous grains, seeds and fruits; industrial or medicinal plants; straw and fodder (HS code 12) - an increase of $965,201;
  • Coffee, tea, maté and spices (HS code 09) - an increase of $188,998;
  • Miscellaneous edible preparations (HS code 21) - an increase of $66,443.

The largest declines in Russia’s imports from Tanzania in the 1st quarter of 2020 over the 1st quarter of 2019 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes (HS code 24) - a decrease of $3,344,303;
  • Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons (HS code 08) - a decrease of $95,520.
